My art is a venue for a realm of discussion that does not easily find a place in our everyday lives. As people, I think that we need a certain amount of formality and tradition to help us relate to and understand one another, but there are so many things beneath the surface of our conversations that have somehow lost their place. The thoughts unspoken throughout the day can quietly leak out onto paper. It is a place to whisper to each other and be honest.
Having learned to draw as a child who saw comics and cartoons as the mark for the highest grade of artistic success, the form of my work often draws from the comic language, with a heavy emphasis on text. I like the clarity of this language, as I want the viewer to have immediate access to the world I am creating. Within this world, there may be elements that are less easily understood, but I do not want it to be a struggle for the viewer to get there in the first place.
I see my work as positive and uplifting. That is what I want it to be. I want it to be truthful, but I don’t believe in pointing out sadness without also pointing towards the joy in life. When I ask for a person’s attention, I want to give them something that either reaffirms what they already believe is good about the world or helps them cope with what is bad. It pleases me most when people find this in my work. Love and coping.
